Ray McBride, “Ray”, age 90, of
Toledo, passed away Friday, May 16,
2008 at Oakleaf Village with his
loving family by his side.
Ray
was born February 25, 1918, in
Alabama, to John Frank and Margaret
Ellen (Harrison) McBride. After
graduating from High School, he
joined the Civilian Conservation
Corp. and was in charge of company
supply. A WWII U.S. Coast Guard
Veteran, Ray excelled as a cook. The
highlight of his military career was
his year-long assignment as
Lighthouse Keeper for Marble Head
Lighthouse. After being honorably
discharged, Ray worked as a Meat
Cutter for Seaway Foodtown until
retiring in 1976. A devoted husband
and father, Ray’s five little
girls were his number one priority.
After his wife passed away, he
became the families’ pillar of
strength, instilling in his girls a
sense of security and independence,
preparing them for the future. Ray
was an avid cook and baker,
especially known for his rhubarb
pies. He enjoyed flower and
vegetable gardening. Ray often
returned to Alabama to visit family,
relaxed at his cottage on the lake
in Michigan, and doted on his many
grandchildren.
How do you thank a man who has given
of himself so freely for his loved
ones? We will keep his memory alive
in our hearts forever.
Ray is survived by daughters:
Margaret “Peggy” (Richard)
Weirich, of Temperance, MI, Julie
Stoiber, of Toledo, Barbara (Daniel)

Elekonich, and Ellen and David
Weaver; great grandchildren: Megan

and Olivia Weirich; many nieces and
nephews; and long-time companion:
Barbara Mechel.
He was preceded in death by his
beloved wife, of 21 years: Mary
Jeanette (Gannon) McBride; parents:
5 brothers; and 1 sister.
The family wishes to express
gratitude to the entire staff of
Oakleaf Village as well as Heartland
Hospice for their care and
compassion and suggests that any
donations in Ray’s memory be given
to either organization.
